My mother continued on with a quip I had never heard before; let’s call it suburban folklore. She recounted: “Someone once told me there is a high correlation between family stability and the number of trees and shrubberies you plant.”
I thought our backyard was simply a property limit determined by the city of Hoffman Estates, IL but it’s actually a site of hopeful intimacy. The small saplings that were planted, the bushes that were watered daily, the trees that have now been removed; it's an archive of familial relations.
